13).The most important tool..the bhramastra..is the 'chit' in which the words can be understood only by the person who wrote them(in most of the cases i.e)

14).The freshers are the most sought after..be it in the canteen,the 'free' periods or for completing the records,assignments.

15).The second-years are the ones with the 'I am the don-of-the-college' feeling.

16).The third years are the ones with the 'so-many-backlogs' feeling and the poor souls get down to studying after bossing around in the college for so long.but the fun still continues.(I gave 19 exams last year!!).

17).The fourth years have no connection with the college whatsoever...with no interest in ragging,pulling each other`s legs,the bday parties,the bday bums et al which they enjoyed so much till now.All they want is a good placement and a '1st-class' tag attached to their memo.

19).The first three years are spent in cursing the college,the people there,the system et al.

20).But towards the end of the fourth year,people tend to feel nostalgic abt the pure unadulterated fun they have had for 4 years.Now the very system they disliked,the very canteen they cursed,the time that they spent there,the bday bums they suffered..all these seem like heaven to them.

Is Piracy Really Killing The Music Industry? No!

For more than a decade the music industry has claimed that digital piracy is the main cause for the gradual decline in revenues. However, looking at the sales data of the music industry itself shows that the disappointing income might be better explained by a third factor that is systematically ignored.

After music cassettes were introduced in the mid-70s the number of sales saw a gradual increase, until the late 80s when the CD took over in popularity. Cassettes were eventually phased out as CD sales continued to skyrocket. In music industry vocabulary one could argue that CDs killed cassettes.

Interestingly enough, this format shift was nothing new for the music industry. The exact same pattern also applied to the LP/cassette battle, with cassettes eventually taking over from LPs in the early 80s. Now, three decades after cassettes started to dominate the music business, the CD is losing ground.

This time around there is a new enemy in town, digital piracy. For nearly a decade the U.S. music industry has seen a decline in sales of physical CDs and all this time it has put the blame on digital piracy. By doing so, the labels conveniently ignore the most drastic format shift music has ever seen – the digital revolution.

With the growing popularity of the Internet, computers and most importantly MP3-players, music fans have started to trade in their CDs for MP3s and other digital files. Initially, the public had to convert CDs themselves, but in 2003 the iTunes store opened, selling over a million tracks in the first week.

With this shift from physical to digital, another important change hit the industry, one that may in part explain why the labels’ revenues in the U.S. continued to decline. With the introduction of paid downloads, consumers no longer had to buy a full album if they were only interested in two or three songs. This new freedom for consumers has dramatically changed the music sales landscape.

According to statistics taken from the RIAA shipment database, between 2004 and 2008 the number of single tracks sold in the U.S. increased by 669 percent while the number of album sales dropped 42 percent. Consequently, the income of the big labels suffered since single track sales are less profitable than full albums. As can be seen in the chart below, the number of music ‘units’ sold continues to grow rapidly nonetheless.

So where does piracy fit into this picture? Truth is, we just don’t know.

File-sharing is obviously a by-product of the digital revolution in music, but its effect on revenues has been much overstated. In every annual report that comes out, the music industry blames piracy for its troubles, even though digital sales are booming and even though these are directly competing with piracy.

We believe that the format shift from physical to digital music, and the change in buying habits that came along with it, may explain the decline in revenue more than piracy can. To back this up we’ve compared the labels’ revenues in two countries on opposite ends of the digital / physical rift, the U.S. and Germany.

Although piracy is rampant in both of these countries, the local music consumption habits are very different according to data published by IFPI. In Germany physical CDs are still very popular, with digital sales representing less than 25% of all music ‘units’ sold. In the U.S. on the other hand, digital outsells physical with 70% of all sales.

If the theory that the shift towards digital music is negatively impacting revenues holds up, then the German record labels should do much better. Indeed, between 2004 and 2008 the net revenue (in dollars) of the U.S record companies fell more than 30%, compared to less than 5% in Germany.

If the data above is not convincing enough, there is also another unexplained anomaly in the sales data.

If digital piracy is such a problem one would expect that it will mostly hurt digital sales, but these are booming instead. Many younger people don’t even own a CD-player anymore, yet the music industry sees digital piracy as the main reason for the decline in physical sales. Strange, because digital piracy would be most likely to cannibalize digital sales. This anomaly also refutes the excuse that the U.S industry could be hit more by piracy than the German.

So what does the music industry have to say about this all? TorrentFreak asked the RIAA to comment on our findings and they released the following statement.

“We’ve always said there are multiple reasons for the decline of the industry during the past ten years: Competition for the entertainment dollar. Diversification of music consumption and access. But we also think people being able to steal music online is the primary reason. Not the only, but the primary.”

We obviously have to differ with the RIAA here. The digital revolution in music has changed the entire industry by altering the consumption habits of music fans. Although piracy could also be a factor, the data we’ve seen thus far suggests that it plays only a minor role, if it has any effect at all.

In severe backlash to Facebook's privacy faux paus, a group of Facebookers have declared 31 May, i.e. today, as "Quit Facebook Day". Now, fancy as it may sound, it hasn't gathered any momentum whatsoever. The reasons are obvious. Although it is an offence, majority of us aren't affected enough by the privacy crisis to get off the grid. The numbers say it all: of the 400 million Facebook users, the number of 'committed quitters' was 25831 at the time this article was being penned. And we'd bet our salaries that half of these are going to chicken out, and half of those who quit will be coming back within a week. It's just not possible to quit 'society', not for the 17-million Indian Facebookers! So what does all this spell for Facebook Inc.?

While the number of users wouldn't be affected, the brand has been tarnished. As pointed by a survey by Vision Critical, even after the introduction of the so-called 'simpler privacy options', 81 per cent of the 699 users questioned said that they would be cautious with the information they put on Facebook now. Well, we'd only suggest that if you have ever harbored big dreams of having your own social networking site, now is an ideal time to pull some traffic!

Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook's new privacy settings

Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, after the spate of recent concerns and outcries, announced the social networking site’s latest privacy and security settings in Palo Alto yesterday. Acknowledging that a “lot of people are angry with us [Facebook]”, Zuckerberg announced a new, “simpler way to control your information”. This unfortunately amounts to nothing more than an opt-out feature, which allows users to choose who will see which content, whether it’s just friends, friends of friends, or everyone (including third parties or partner sites). Zuckerberg says this will give Facebook’s users “more control” over what they share, and optimistically, feels that this will make them “want to share more”.

Choices, choices, choices – life is filled with them, and so is the internet. It seems though that some web companies want to help you out by making some of these decisions for you. They say if you don’t like what they decide, you can always opt-out. Opt-out, instead of opt-in…a debate that appears to be as polarized as any out there, with end-users on one side, and networking sites on the other. Things are not so black and white though.

This can be seen with Facebook, and its efforts in trying to personalize the site to each individual’s tastes and preferences, to bring them only what interests them, they have run aground time and again, falling off the fence between providing personal information to third parties (required for their vision of personalization/individualization to work) and users who want to protect their privacy.

While none of us are very happy going through a long list of controls to ‘configure’ our own privacy, many have unfortunately learnt from experience that one cannot trust their service providers implicitly. Security gaffes have been made by many parties in the recent past, with user ID and sensitive personal information leaking out, but we should remember that these companies do take the security and privacy of their users’ information seriously, and are making all efforts to close any holes, and provide something more solid than just an illusion of safety.

All that remains for one to question, is if relevant advertising and searches are really for you, with it comes the bludgeoning reminder that those sites you use daily are indeed not non-profit organisations, and that hiring the best engineers and marketing professionals in the world is definitely not cheap. Charles Nicholls, the founder of SeeWhy.com, blogged his views on Zuckerberg’s announcement and the recent controversies surrounding social networking sites, reminding us that sites like Google and Facebook (serving nearly half a billion people) aren’t free to run, and require some rather hefty resources.

So the motive behind sharing your tastes and preferences isn’t as sinister as you’d imagine, rather, it’s quite mundane: Money. Facebook would rather get paid more by increasing the odds of you succumbing to their ‘personalized advertising’, and so would Google. Before you take a lofty stance however, remember that you don’t get to decide how much profit is too much, or whether Google or Facebook should offer relevant advertising with Cost-Per-Click (CPC) or conventional impression-based advertising with Cost-Per-Mile (CPM).

All you can choose is if you want to use the “free” services of Facebook or Google or not. A day of platitudes, our latest truism is “to use or not to use”, or “choose to use”. Another question you have to ask yourself is if you really do get bothered by the advertisements, or are they actually quite unobtrusive. Want to do away with them altogether? Well, you will have to pay for that! Get a Premium account on Apps, and your Gmail will not have ads.

Back to Facebook’s new settings: an interesting feature will surely placate Facebook’s wary users, enabling them to apply these new settings “retroactively”. This allows them to protect the information that might still be visible in previous status updates and posts by them.

While this might be great, the reactions to the move are mixed. Many feel that the change has come a little too late, after people have already lost trust in the site and become somewhat paranoid about having to “plug the leak” every time new privacy settings are announced. Most however, are relieved, and thank Facebook for finally “listening”.

We on the other hand are disappointed that the only real change is in the interface, which is simpler, but limited, forcing you to change settings each time you want to share something with everyone, which you had previously shared only with a certain group. We would have liked to opt-in for sharing information each time, rather than opt-out or change our settings each time we post or upload content. This is idealistic though: we can’t expect Facebook to give up the ‘sharing with everyone’ option or the basic directory information and the extra money these bring the company, just so we, the end-users, don’t see ‘relevant’ ads. Unless of course, we paid to use the service. For absolute privacy, like everything else in the world, is not free.

The Verdict:

The Samsung S5620 Monte is a distant cousin to Samsung CorbyPro and has many resemblances in terms of interface and features. However, it lacks the hardware keypad, but incorporates a capacitive touchscreen instead of the resistive unlike CorbyPro. It is a fairly average performer in the captured photo and video quality test. It is a decent performer in the loudspeaker test with a score of 8 on 10. It had consistent results throughout the signal reception and call clarity test. Hence, it fancies its chances as a good mid-end phone with a decent camera and good music player, at an affordable price.

"You Like This" on Facebook

Sophos, an IT security and data protection firm, has reported that Facebook is under attack by a phenomenon called “clickjacking”, which is spreading ‘like’ fire. Is it really harmful? No news on that yet, except the fact that the affected user will apparently ‘like’ some inane external links. Affected users however, have only themselves to blame. What did they do to deserve it?

Well, they visited a friend’s profile page, and clicked on one of the following ‘liked’ external links, to read more about them:

“LOL This girl gets OWNED after a POLICE OFFICER reads her STATUS MESSAGE.”

“This man takes a picture of himself EVERYDAY for 8 YEARS!!”

“This Girl Has An Interesting Way Of Eating A Banana, Check It Out!”

What happens next is the user is taken to a blank page with a “single line of text” that reads, ‘Click here to continue’. Even if the user doesn’t click right on the text, an invisible iFrame will use any click on the page to publish the very same external link onto the user’s own profile page, thereby propagating the worm. Are we wary just yet? Yup, we don’t want to be caught dead liking something as boring as a man photographing himself daily, or a girl eating suggestively shaped fruit. If you are a victim of this ‘clickjacking’ attack, don’t worry, you can simply remove the offending external links by deleting them from your news feed, and remove the offending pages from their ‘Likes and interests’ section, under the ‘Info’ tab of their profile.

Here’s what Sophos’ Senior Technology Consultant, Graham Cluley, has to say about it: “What the hackers have done is really sneaky. They hide an invisible button - using a hidden iFrame - under your mouse, so wherever you click your mouse-press is hijacked, secretly clicking on a button which tells Facebook that you 'like' the webpage. This then gets published on your own Facebook page and shared with your online friends, resulting in the link spreading virally. Some of the pages ended up with hundreds of thousands of fans as a result. Facebook needs to tighten up the way it handles the 'liking' of external webpages before it is more widely abused by malicious hackers and spammers.”

2) Swiss Government has officially written to Indian Government that they are willing to inform the details of holders of 70 lakh crore rupees in their Banks, if Indian Government officially asks them.

4) But the Indian Government has not sent any official inquiry to Switzerland for details of money which has been sent outside India between 1947 to 2008.. The opposition party is also equally not interested in doing so because most of the amount is owned by politicians and it is every Indian's money.

5) This money belongs to our country. From these funds we can repay 13 times of our country's foreign debt. The interest alone can take care of the Center s yearly budget. People need not pay any taxes and we can pay Rs. 1 lakh to each of 45 crore poor families.

6) Let us imagine, if Swiss Bank is holding Rs. 70 lakh Crores, then how much money is lying in other 69 Banks? How much they have deprived the Indian people? Just think, if the Account holder dies, the bank becomes the owner of the funds in his account.

7) Are these people totally ignorant about the philosophy of Karma? What will this ill-gotten wealth do to them and their families when they own/use such money, generated out of corruption and exploitation?

INTEL pays AMD $1.25 billion to end all legal disputes

Intel and AMD’s long-standing war about patent infringement has finally come to an end, with Intel settling the case outside court for a staggering sum of $1.25 billion. This settlement puts an end to all the legal squabbles between the two, including patent infringement cases, anti-trust litigations and any other charges that AMD had levied against the leading chip manufacturer.

In a joint statement the two companies commented, "While the relationship between the two companies has been difficult in the past, this agreement ends the legal disputes and enables the companies to focus all of our efforts on product innovation and development." Looks like the relationship isn’t going to be much less than difficult in the future either!

The settlement states that Intel will cough up the $1.25 billion within 30 days, agree to adhere to business practice provisions, and give up any patent claims against AMD. The patent rights will be given to both companies in a cross-licensing pact.

AMD, in turn, will drop all charges against Intel in the US and Japan, where there are several cases pending. AMD’s spin-off company, Globalfoundries, will now be allowed to act as an independent company and not need to be registered as a subsidiary.

However, this would not affect the anti-trust charges filed against Intel by the New York General Attorney and the European Union. Intel CEO Paul Otellini was adamant in denying that the company has acted illegally, saying: “Throughout this process we have not wavered in our convictions that Intel has operated within the law. We strongly disagree with the New York Attorney General’s case and believe the case is entirely without merit… it is unfortunate that the New York Attorney General intentionally distorted the facts.”

AMD’s legal, corporate and public affairs EVP Tom McCoy distanced their pact from the same. ZDNET quoted him in a media conference call as saying: “For us, this has never been about money. It’s about the marketplace. There’s no correlation between the settlement amount and anything in the EU.”

All corporate squabbling aside, we just hope AMD puts the huge cash dividends to good use in their research centers, sparking off another processor war. Because after all, it’s the consumers who stand to gain when two companies get competitive...

Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer and businessman. The seventh child of the Jackson family, he made his debut on the professional music scene in 1968 as a member of The Jackson . He then began a solo career in 1971 while still a member of the group and was referred to as the "King of Pop"in subsequent years. Jackson's 1982 album Thriller remains the world's best-selling album of all time,and four of his other solo studio albums are among the world's best-selling records: Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995).

In the early 1980s, he became a dominant figure in popular music and the first African American entertainer to amass a strong crossover following on MTV. The popularity of his music videos airing on MTV, such as "Beat It", "Billie Jean" and "Thriller"—widely credited with transforming the music video from a promotional tool into an art form—helped bring the relatively new channel to fame. Videos such as "Black or White" and "Scream" made Jackson an enduring staple on MTV in the 1990s. With stage performances and music videos, Jackson popularized a number of physically complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk. His distinctive musical sound and vocal style influenced many hip hop, pop music and contemporary R&B artists across several generations.

Jackson donated and raised millions of dollars for beneficial causes through his Heal the World Foundation, charity singles, and support of 39 charities. Other aspects of his personal life, including his often changing appearances and eccentric behavior, generated significant controversy that damaged his public image. Though he was accused of child sexual abuse in 1993, the criminal investigation was closed due to lack of evidence and Jackson was not charged. 2008–09: Milestones, real estate, planned return to live performance

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Thriller, Jackson issued Thriller 25, comprising original material from the album, re-mixes, the previously unreleased song "For All Time" and a DVD. Thriller 25 was a commercial success, having done particularly well as a re-issue, peaking at number one in eight countries and Europe. It reached number three in the UK and top 10 on over 30 national charts. It was ineligible for the Billboard 200 chart as a re-release, but entered atop the Pop Catalog chart, where it stayed for 11 non-consecutive weeks and had the best sales on that chart since December 1996. 12 weeks Thriller 25 sold over three million copies worldwide. As of November 2008, U.S. sales of Thriller 25 stood at 688,000 copies, making it the best-selling catalog album of 2008.^[146] To date, it sold 774,000 copies in the US.

To celebrate Jackson's 50th birthday, Sony BMG released a compilation album called King of Pop in various countries. These albums included tracks from Jackson's group and solo career, all voted for by fans. The albums had different tracklists, according to how the fans of each nation voted. Although it was not released in the US, King of Pop did reach the top 10 in the vast majority of countries where it was issued. It also charted in other countries, albeit lower, from imported sales.

Fortress Investments considered a foreclosure sale of Neverland Ranch to service a loan Jackson owed on the property, but ultimately sold the loan to Colony Capital LLC. In November, Jackson transferred the title of Neverland Ranch to Sycamore Valley Ranch Company LLC. At the time of his death, Jackson still owned an unknown stake in the property; Sycamore Valley Ranch was a joint venture between Jackson and Colony Capital LLC. The loan Jackson owed was cleared, and he acquired $35 million in the venture.

Jackson had been scheduled to perform 50 sold-out concerts to over one million people, at London's O₂ arena, from July 13, 2009, to March 6, 2010. Following this residency, Jackson also planned to tour Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. During a publicity press conference, he had made suggestions of possible retirement. Randy Phillips, president and chief executive of AEG Live, had stated that the first 10 dates alone would have earned the singer approximately £50 million. Phillips said that the promotion company had a three-and-a-half year plan to work with Jackson, including a possible world tour, the release of new music and a 3D film based on Thriller.

Jackson made a music video, currently known as "Dome Project", in early June 2009. The video is scheduled to finish post-production in mid-July 2009.

2009: Death

On June 25, 2009, Jackson collapsed at his rented mansion at 100 North Carolwood Drive in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles. Attempts at resuscitating him by his personal physician were unsuccessful.Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics received a 911 call at 12:22 p.m. (PDT), arriving three minutes and seventeen seconds later at Jackson's location. He was reportedly not breathing and CPR was performed. Resuscitation efforts continued both en route to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, and for an hour further after arriving at approximately 1:13 p.m. (20:13 UTC). He was noted to have been in cardiac arrest by the paramedics who attended him at his house. Jackson was pronounced dead at approximately 2:25 p.m. local time (21:25 UTC). Rumors and news of Jackson's death broke web records, triggering a cyberspace traffic and creating severe traffic spikes to websites such as Google, Facebook,Twitter and Wikipedia. Vigils were held by members of the general public after the deatH.
